Making Sense of Technology

Tech Articles for Magazines, Newspapers, Periodicals, Web

A professional writer with over thirty years of experience and a well-known byline, Pam is published in a variety of print and electronic media. She writes about subjects ranging from technology to travel. She specialized for many years in writing for and about the Web, and brings to her work abundant experience in technical writing, corporate communications and periodical writing.

Adept at monitoring trends, issues, technologies, and players, Pam has covered a wide range of technical subjects. Her print credits include a 7+ year tenure as weekly Internet columnist for the Victoria Times-Colonist newspaper, plus numerous features and departments for industry trade journals, in-house publications, and tech periodicals. Prominent among the latter is IDG’s Publish magazine, a trade journal focused on digital content and electronic communications. Feature pieces Pam has written for Publish cover topics ranging from privacy and personalization technology to marketing to the “Net generation.”

Whether web site copy, full-length magazine feature, or quick sidebar, her work is distinguished by clear, straight-forward language; meticulous research; clean copy; and the ability to distill complex technologies down to their simplest essence. Editors appreciate her dependability, professionalism, and respect for deadlines. Please see below for writing samples.

Random Access Column

The Internet. There simply isn’t a more timely topic for a column. In the last decade, the Net has exploded into public consciousness, growing exponentially and changing forever how people work, play, and interact.

The rate of change on this new frontier is dizzying. Each new advance in technology pushes the envelope further, both in the evolution of software tools and in the heights of innovation and functionality they afford us. Exciting new online applications are emerging, and just as many more remain as yet undreamed of. New moral and ethical dilemmas are surfacing, too, as we continue to explore these uncharted realms.

The Random Access column guided readers through these tricky waters. For over seven years, it addressed just about every aspect of technology you can imagine, from the Internet and telecommunications to consumer electronics and industry events. Varying from 1,000 to 1,500 words and refreshingly short on techobabble, this popular column appeared weekly in the business section of the Victoria Times-Colonist newspaper (a CanWest publication). It endeavoured not only to help readers make sense of technology, but also to stay on top of its head-spinning rate of change.

Judging from the email Pam received over the years, the column also succeeded in the difficult task of accommodating the often conflicting priorities of beginners and advanced users.

Provocative, incisive, and still relevant today, the columns provide a fascinating chronicle of the short but turbulent lifespan of the Web. Second print rights and electronic rights are available (though earlier pieces could require updating). For more information, contact Pam at pb@weblens.org.
